In 1966 Paul Van Dooren and his three partners opened up their first store "The Van Doren Rubber Company" in Anaheim, California. In the store you could order your shoes in the morning and pick up up the ready made rubber sole shoes that same afternoon. In the late 70´s the shoes started to show among the early surf and skateboard culture being worn by legends such as Stacy Peralta and Tony Alva. But it wasn´t until a young Sean Penn wore a pair of Vans in the movie "Fast times at Ridgemont High", that the brand really got their commercial recognition.
